Are Australian Labradoodles Really Hypoallergenic? A Guide to Doodle Coats

When families start searching for the perfect dog, one of the first questions we get asked at Tarheel Labradoodles is: "Are your puppies really hypoallergenic?"

It’s a great question, especially for families who have suffered from pet allergies in the past! The short, honest answer is that no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. All dogs produce some level of dander and saliva. However, authentic Multi-Generational Australian Labradoodles are as close to allergy-friendly as a dog can get.

The Three Types of Labradoodle Coats

Not all doodles are created equal. Early-generation crosses (like an F1 Labradoodle) can have unpredictable coats. But purpose-bred Australian Labradoodles typically feature one of two highly desirable, non-shedding coat types:

  • The Fleece Coat: This is the most popular and sought-after coat. It feels incredibly soft—almost like an Angora sweater—and falls in loose, swooping waves or soft spirals. It is virtually non-shedding and highly recommended for families with mild to moderate allergies.
  • The Wool Coat: Similar to a Poodle’s coat, the wool coat features tighter curls and is slightly denser. This coat is also non-shedding and is often the best choice for families with severe asthma or severe pet allergies.
  • The Hair Coat (The Outlier): Often seen in early-generation crosses, this coat is wispy, can have an odor, and usually sheds. We do not breed for hair coats at Tarheel Labradoodles.

Why "Multi-Gen" Matters for Allergies

Because we breed Multi-Generational Australian Labradoodles, our puppies have a long lineage of established, allergy-friendly coats. We test our parent dogs to ensure we are passing down the furnishings (the gene responsible for that adorable teddy-bear face and low-shedding coat) so you can put the lint roller away for good.

If you have severe allergies, we always recommend chatting with us directly during your application process so we can help match you with a puppy whose coat type fits your specific needs!
