Behind the Whelping Box: The First 8 Weeks of a Tarheel Labradoodle

Have you ever wondered what your puppy is doing before they finally come home to you? At Tarheel Labradoodles, those first eight weeks are a busy, beautiful, and highly intentional time.

We don't use kennels. Our puppies are raised right here in our home, hearing the sounds of a busy household and getting endless cuddles. Here is a sneak peek at what the first two months look like for our puppies:

Weeks 1-2: The Neonatal Stage & ENS

During the first two weeks, puppies are completely dependent on their mama. Their eyes and ears are closed, but their brains are rapidly developing. Starting on Day 3, we perform Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). This involves briefly introducing the puppies to gentle stressors (like holding them in different positions or placing their paws on a cool towel). Studies show that ENS improves cardiovascular performance, strengthens immune systems, and builds stress tolerance for life!

Weeks 3-4: Eyes Wide Open

Magic happens in week three! Their eyes open, their ears unseal, and they take their first wobbly steps. We start introducing a dedicated potty area in their pen, laying the foundational concepts of house-training before they even leave our home.

Weeks 5-6: Socialization Station

This is when their little personalities blossom! We introduce them to a variety of textures, sounds (like the vacuum, thunderstorms, and dropped pans), and safe toys. At six weeks, they receive their first veterinary health clearance and vaccines. This is also when we host our exciting "Puppy Playdates" for our waitlist families!

Weeks 7-8: Preparing for You

In their final weeks with us, we practice crate exposure and basic manners. We officially evaluate their temperaments to ensure they are matched with the perfect family dynamic. By the time they hit 8 weeks, they are confident, resilient, and ready to meet their new best friends.

When you bring a Tarheel Labradoodle home, you aren't just getting a puppy—you are getting 8 weeks of purposeful, loving foundation.
