F1, F1B, or Multi-Gen? Decoding Australian Labradoodle Generations

If you’ve been researching doodles for more than five minutes, you’ve probably run into a confusing alphabet soup of letters and numbers: F1, F1B, F2, Multi-Gen. What does it all mean, and more importantly, what does it mean for your future puppy?
As an ALAA President and breeder with over 15 years of experience, I want to help demystify this so you can make the best choice for your family.
The Early Generations: F1 and F1B
- F1 (First Generation): This is a 50/50 cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle. While they can be lovely dogs, their coats and temperaments are highly unpredictable. Many F1s have wiry "hair" coats and shed just like a Labrador.
- F1B (First Generation Backcross): This is an F1 Labradoodle bred back to a purebred Poodle (making them 75% Poodle and 25% Lab). This was historically done to improve the coat, making it more allergy-friendly, but it can sometimes result in a dog with a very high-energy, high-strung Poodle temperament.
The Tarheel Standard: The Multi-Gen
An authentic Australian Labradoodle is not just a Lab and a Poodle. The breed was developed in Australia by infusing a few other specific breeds (like the English Cocker Spaniel) to perfect the temperament, bone structure, and coat.
A Multi-Generational (or Multi-Gen) Australian Labradoodle means that the puppy's parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents were all Australian Labradoodles.
Why We Only Breed Multi-Gens:
- Consistency: There is no guessing game. We know exactly what size, coat type, and temperament our puppies will have.
- Allergy-Friendly: Multi-Gens consistently produce the gorgeous, non-shedding fleece and wool coats that allergy sufferers need.
- The "Teddy Bear" Temperament: Through generations of careful selection, the Multi-Gen has achieved that signature intuitive, joyful, and calm family temperament that the breed is famous for.
When you adopt an ALAA-registered Multi-Generational puppy, you are getting decades of careful, ethical breed development wrapped up in one adorable package!
